An Open-Ended Sandbox Game for iPhone
Infinite Gearbox is an open-ended sandbox game that lets players build complex kinetic sculptures
on an infinite plane. It's part simulation, part interactive art, with a dash of mechanical
My goal with Infinite Gearbox was to strip away as much complexity as possible and give the
player direct physical control over the space in front of them. Unnecessary menus, configurations
and other distractions were pulled out to let the player focus on a zen-garden-like cultivation
and curation experience.
Gears move automatically and interlock automatically when their teeth mesh together. A faint highlight
indicates a moving gear. As the space is explored, new areas are created dynamically; they can
immediately be combined with existing structures.
The game has a calm, meditative feeling and has been especially popular with young children, who figure
out the core mechanics quickly and play the game for long stretches of time.
